Evidence Level: Investigational / Theoretical

Primarily preclinical or very limited human data — mechanism-based reasoning more than a demonstrated clinical effect. Treat as investigational.

Human evidence: Very limited early-stage human biology studies; no large controlled trials.

Animal evidence: Rodent studies link MOTS-C to insulin sensitivity and exercise-capacity outcomes.

Introduction & Mechanism of Action

Mitochondrial-derived signaling studied in metabolic adaptation and cellular stress.

Encoded by mitochondrial DNA; studied for activating AMPK signaling and translocating to the nucleus under metabolic stress, positioning it as a communication link between mitochondria and the rest of the cell.

Receptors/targets: No confirmed cell-surface receptor — proposed intracellular AMPK-pathway activation

Areas of Research Interest

Benefits Reported in Research

Reported Research Dosing Range

The figures below are cited from published research literature and protocol references — they describe what has been studied, not a personal prescription or instruction.

Reported range: 200–1000 mcg

Reported frequency: 1× daily, subcutaneous

Reported cycle duration: 8–12 weeks

Escalation & maintenance: A dedicated weekly escalation and maintenance schedule specific to this peptide has not yet been published here — follow the dose range and frequency above, titrating conservatively from the low end, and consult a physician before adjusting.

Research Reference Data

Published research on MOTS-C reports administration at 200–1000 mcg via subcutaneous route. The table below cites that published research — it is not an individualized instruction.

Research Protocol Timeline

A reference summary of how this compound is described across published research — formulation, reported administration, and reported cycle length.

  1. 01

    Formulation

Supplied as a lyophilized 10 mg vial requiring reconstitution before research use.

  2. 02

    Reconstitution Reference

Published research protocols reconstitute this vial with 2 mL bacteriostatic water to reach 5.00 mg/mL.

  3. 03

    Reported Research Administration

Published research describes 1× daily, subcutaneous administration via subcutaneous route, at 600 mcg per administration.

  4. 04

    Cycle Reference

Published protocols describe a cycle duration of 8–12 weeks. Consult a physician before beginning any new research cycle.

Dilution Guide

Reconstitute with 2 mL bacteriostatic water

Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water) is the only recommended diluent. Do not dilute with sterile water, normal saline, lidocaine, or any other solution unless explicitly specified by the manufacturer.

Handling Guide

General laboratory handling practice cited for reference — not a personalized instruction. Any human use should follow the guidance of a licensed physician.

Wash hands and clean the injection site with an alcohol swab. Pinch a fold of skin and insert the needle at a 45–90° angle for standard subcutaneous injection (abdomen, thigh, or upper arm). Inject slowly, withdraw, and apply gentle pressure. Rotate injection sites to reduce irritation, and dispose of needles in an approved sharps container.

Storage

Store lyophilized (powder) vials in a freezer at -20°C, protected from light. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, refrigerate at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe recommended in your supplier documentation — typically 2–4 weeks.

Monitoring

Monitor for injection-site reactions and the side effects listed above. Stop use and consult a physician if severe or persistent reactions occur. This is a general monitoring guideline, not a personalized medical monitoring plan.

Side Effects

Drug interactions

Safety

Mechanistic interest does not establish therapeutic benefit. FDA reports insufficient human exposure and safety information for compounded administration.

Expected Results & Comparison

MOTS-C and SS-31 both target mitochondrial biology but via different mechanisms — MOTS-C is a mitochondrial-derived peptide studied for metabolic/AMPK signaling and exercise adaptation, while SS-31 (elamipretide) directly targets mitochondrial inner-membrane phospholipids and has more advanced human clinical-trial support across specific disease conditions. SS-31 currently has the stronger human evidence base of the two.
